Last evening we had D & Don aboard from
s/v Southern Cross. No, unlike ours, their boat is not a Southern Cross. Theirs is a Dickerson 41 ketch, a beautiful wooden boat, named
Southern Cross.
In all of our experience, there has only been one boat which was named the same as its make. Pat Henry sailed a 31-foot Southern Cross, named
Southern Cross around the world. It is a pretty good story, chronicled in her book,
By the Grace of the Sea: A Woman's Solo Odyssey Around the World. We call this book a recommended read, even if Ms. Henry doesn't know how to properly name a boat.
Anyway, I digress. Here is a photo of D & Don:
This morning D called on the VHF and asked if we wanted to go to Brava Beach to check out the wave action. By the time 10AM rolled around, there were over a dozen cruisers packed into a Publico van and headed around to the other side of the bay. A 30-minute hike from the road found us at Brava Beach. See the map below for the location of Brava Beach:
The big north swell was stirring up some pretty big waves. Breakers could be seen, not only at the beach but far out on the horizon. It was an amazing and intimidating sight. Needless to say, there would be no body surfing on this day.
Once back on the boat, we made final preparations for our next guests. Nydia & Jesse are due to arrive by tiny plane in about an hour. Therefore, dear Reader, I suppose we should be signing off. Until next time.
