Memorial Day Weekend

26 May 2008 | Dewey, Culebra, Puerto Rico
CURRENT LOCATION: Tied to a mooring ball near Cayo Pirata, in Ensenada Honda, Culebra, Puerto Rico

Yes, Puerto Rico also celebrates the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend. In fact, Puerto Rico celebrates most US National Holidays, a number of Catholic Holidays, and the birthdays of celebrated Puerto Rican statesman. For those of us here in Culebra, a holiday weekend means many more tourists on the island and many more boats in the water.

The influx of people was already starting around midday on Friday, when we escorted our guests to the ferry dock. It was a zoo of activity. After dodging the parade of boats in the canal on our way back to Prudence, we had already had enough. With the exception of our trip in to Mamacita's for our usual Sunday breakfast, we have stayed on the boat throughout the weekend.

Thus, the affects of the holiday weekend upon us is exactly the opposite of most folks. While others take advantage of the three-day weekend to get away from home, we remain ensconced in ours. Of course, no good thing comes without a price and word on the news is that it is getting more expensive to travel in the current US economic climate (CLICK HERE to see what I mean). So, on this holiday weekend, our thoughts go out to all of you whose budgets are struggling to ride the tide of rising fuel prices and all that goes along with that.

Meanwhile, we hope that we will soon stop rocking from the wakes of passing boats and that life here on Culebra will return, once again, to its normally quiet state of paradise. At least, that is, until July (note the list of holidays above), when a series of holidays is bound to keep us boat bound for the better part of the month.

We are Doug & Sheryl, owners and crew of the sailing vessel Prudence.

This blog starts in 2005, when we initially had the idea to quit our jobs and live on a sailboat while we cruised to the Caribbean. At that time we had never owned a boat and had no experience sailing. [...]
