We were sitting around the boat, minding our own business, when we heard a gentle horn sound outside. Sheryl was the first up the companionway steps and she quietly said over her shoulder, "Coast Guard."
I followed up through companionway and saw an inflatable boat containing officials from the coast guard. They declared their intent to board, and three of the fellows pictured in the boat came aboard while the others milled about waiting for their companions.
It was a fairly simple procedure. They were conducting a routine inspection. Sheryl escorted two men below and showed them our engine, head, and safety equipment. I stayed in the cockpit with the remaining fellow and answered all the questions pertaining to the paperwork (boat documentation and passport required).
As they departed we received our copy of a clean inspection report. No violations - (Whew!). It is always a little intimidating having officials invade your home without any advance notice; however, these gentleman were polite and considerate. Now that we have been inspected, it is our hope that we won't have to subject ourselves to another boarding for a while.
