Thanksgiving Afloat

27 November 2008 | Culebra, Puerto Rico
CURRENT LOCATION: On a mooring ball near the reef in Ensenada Dakity

This Thanksgiving we were fortunate enough to have several offers to join folks for their respective holiday feasts. We elected to accept the offer closest to home, and took a short dinghy ride over to S/V Miss Heidi for a delicious mid-afternoon meal.

In addition to our hosts, Rick & Debbie, Geoff & Kathleen from S/V Gladys were present for the celebratory repast. Good food, good spirits, and good conversation assured that a good time was had by all.

We have much for which to be thankful. Only four years ago, Thanksgiving Day 2004, Sheryl nor I had a clue what the term 'cruising' meant and our experiences with boats was nil. A review of the 400+ blog entries and 3,500 photos posted since then shows how we got from there to here. It is this amazing journey and all of the people involved for which I am most thankful.

Starting with our friends Steph and Bruno, who introduced us to cruising, to the great folks at the Whortonsville Yacht and Tractor Club who coached us through our formative first year as boat owners, on to the experienced cruisers we met while living aboard in New Bern, and finally all the people we met between there and Culebra. We are truly grateful to have taken a turn in life which has taken us down a road which crosses the paths of so many fine persons.

Most of all, though, I must give thanks for the one person who has been by my side through it all. Without Sheryl, none of this would be possible. She is my guiding light, my support network, and my very best friend. With her, anything is possible. So, although I have no idea where next Thanksgiving will find us, I know that it will be wonderful because of the simple fact that we will be there together.

We are Doug & Sheryl, owners and crew of the sailing vessel Prudence.

This blog starts in 2005, when we initially had the idea to quit our jobs and live on a sailboat while we cruised to the Caribbean. At that time we had never owned a boat and had no experience sailing. [...]
