Goro Pass
10 October 2015
We found Mac and Wendy along the shore under high mountains stained with red, and spiked with spindly pines that are endemic to New Caledonia. We tied to them as our windlass was more of a windless! Dave needed time to fix it, but after nearly a week on the boat, Mac, Dave and I just needed to get off the boats and go explore. Wendy decided to sit tight and read.
There was a huge relic of a bygone era on shore. Something to do with mining. A big rusty frame that once upon a time must have trundled ore from the chutes in the side of the mountain out to ships that would take it away for processing. It was an impressive, if slightly sad sight. A road wound around the shoreline, with just the odd tree between it and the sea. While walking along it we talked about what we might see and someone mentioned these striped snakes. Well lo and behold within a very short distance we started seeing these things everywhere! They were pleasant enough, but with bands of alternating orange and black and about 2+ feet long we didn't want to get too close. Theoretically their mouths were so small they couldn't bite us, but since they were poisonous, you know Dave stayed away! I got some great pics.
We enjoyed this area until early Monday, when we headed to Noumea
