CSY-44 Antigua - Hull 001

On the Hard Projects

16 December 2012 | Westland marina - Titusville
Dean - rain but WARM
Sunday....
With respect to the project List for AB (while on the "hard"), we're slowly working through them... one or two at a time...
1.) The sanding of the Hull is nearly complete... Mid-ship port side is about all that remain.
2.) the Port-side blisters have been broken open, ground down to good material (where gelcoat, or fiberglass had deteriorated), and are now 'drying out'. Each day I spray them with 'fresh' water, to speed up the leaching of any remaining salt water out of the fiberglas.
3.) The project of replacing the Cutlass Bearing is underway... So far, the 4 bolts that secure the shaft coupling to the transmission have been removed (Those were easy, because I put "Never-Seez" on the bolts the last time I aligned the engine, and shaft). The set screws that secure the coupling to the propeller shaft were my biggest worry... and after much soaking with BP Blaster (penetrating liquid) they came right out... whew !!!!!
4.) The Propeller shaft does have a wee-bit of wear where it rubbed for years inside the cutless bearing. One of the things I'd like to do with the new bearing installation is to leave about 3/4" to 1" of the brass cased bearing stick out from the keel. This will give me something to 'grab on to' IF I ever have to change this again. Right now it's installed (by others) flush with the keel surface (looks great, but will a "pain" to remove.
5.) Raising the waterline is going along with the blister fix... The designers of the CSY-44-Antigua never anticipated the weight that we carry on the foward part of this vessel... a.) Dinghy when at sea, b. 100 gallons of diesel in the fwd. fuel tank, and c.) 286 feet of 7/16" anchor chain plus the secondary anchor chain.
So, when fully loaded for sea...the blue boot stripe at the original waterline is nearly covered... PLUS we have a 3 list to port because of the refrigerator change (getting rid of the eutectic holding plates (weight)). I think that's some of the reason there's only blisters on the port side.... The starboard side of the vessel has about 5 blisters, as opposed to 10 times that on port side.
