CSY-44 Antigua - Hull 001

Christmas with Family - Glenville NY

24 December 2012 | Glenville NY
Dean - Cold but Clear
Monday, Christmas Eve – Dec. 24th
Good Morning… from Glenville, NY - (Ruth, and Matt’s house).
Susan and I picked up the rental car on Saturday morning… packed it; and were on the road by about 11 AM. We were out of FL by early afternoon; blew through GA, and SC by dinner time, (ate dinner at a TA-Truck stop), and were up near Rocky Mount NC by about 10 PM. We called our cruising friends, The Gainey’s to see if they had any suggestions on a local motel/hotel.
We decided on a local Quality Inn to rest for the night. The fiasco that followed our phone reservation (reserved by calling a South American call center) was one for the record books… We must have traversed the same roads at least three times… trying to obey the directions given by our ‘smart phones’. Finally we stopped at a gas station…and asked…”I know this is going to sound strange, but are we ‘close’ to a Quality Inn????? Our phones tell us we are…but this is our third time through here…”
The attendant was very helpful… He said “if it wasn’t for that Meineke sign right there (pointing), you could see the Quality Inn from here”… wow…
Then… even when we got to the top of the ramp, our Quality INN was to our left… The SMART PHONE said “turn right”. We then turned the phone OFF!!!!! (These things can be GREAT or they can be very frustrating!!!)
Anyway… we got an email, and phone conversation going with the Besants (Marty, and Peg) regarding our passing through Washington DC, and getting together for Breakfast/lunch. Marty picked Plato’s Restaurant (Baltimore Ave. and Rhode Island). It was great seeing them, and catching up on the happenings in our respective ‘worlds’, and families.
After lunch/brunch, Susan and I took off again on I-95… and then soon changed to the NJ Turnpike, (where things really slowed down)… Up until then we had been traveling about 75 to 80 MPH… All of a sudden, as we approached NYC the traffic started to be ‘stop and go’ type. UG!!!!! Finally we elected to take a more circuitous route but faster (I-287) to take us to the bottom of I-87. That worked! We were back at speed (75 MPH)….
We got to Ruth and Matt’s house about 7:30 PM… in time for supper, a nice evening of conversations.
The rental car we’re driving was getting an average of 32.2 MPG. (we were happy, about that!!!).
Santa came early to this house….(timing adjusted a wee-bit for Matt’s children’s schedule). Wonderful morning of gift exchanges… We got a few large things from Santa for the boat… a ditch bag; a VHF radio for the Aft Cabin; and an Apple I-Pad. Nice!
OK…back to enjoying being surrounded by family….
Merry Christmas to ALL from the Perry’s.
