Touring with the Phillips - MM17 No Name Key

28 February 2013 | Big Pine Key - No Name Key -
Dean - Chance of Rain all day but nice
27 FEB 2013 -- Day of TOURING -- MM 17 No Name Key - Key Deer Hunting – etc.
Today was a day of doing really “touristy” stuff with Karen and Tony Phillips (s/v Leap of Faith).
Starting at 1100 hours we took their car down to mile marker (MM) 17 to No Name key (just to the east of Key West)… to see a BAT TOWER (no Val Kilmer was not in residence).
I guess it was a good but failed idea to bring thousands of bats to the keys to assist with the mosquito problems…. The trouble was the bats all disappeared, or died… and no one really knew why… so there stands the bat tower (photos to follow), with No residents.
That was immediately followed by lunch at ZaZa’s (Italian)…
We then went to a “Blue Hole”… with resident gators, and beautiful key birds (gators in some photos to follow)… The “blue hole” a real Blue Hole in the geological sense, like “Dean’s Blue Hole in the Abacos”. I think Tony said it was really a flooded Quary… but the gators have taken it as their home now…
We, then, went looking for the small KEY DEER (about the size of small dogs, but being a protected species here, they are very tame…and don’t run from humans). Photos to follow.
On the way to find the key deer we found the “NO NAME PUB” on Big Pine Key. That was quite the place… Just like Cabbage Key on the west side of FL… the pub had nearly every inch of walls, and ceiling covered in autographed dollar bills. When the Flagler railroad was built the bar served the workers in a few ways…. Drinks at the pub, and a house of ill-repute on the second floor…
We just had drinks on the first floor.
We eventually found the key deer, thanks to “eagle-eye” Tony… who spotted two deer in a yard, while Karen was doing about 30 MPH in the car… NICE!!!! We got some nice photos…
On the way back to Marathon, we stopped at Lazy-Days for Happy Hour, but no joy there… too NUTS.. So we retired to the Sunset Grille, by the 7-Mile Bridge; got a table by the pool, where we had music by a local musician, happy hour drinks, and food. Wonderful DAY…
