CSY-44 Antigua - Hull 001

GReat Guana - Fisher Bay

28 February 2018 | Fisher Bay = Great Guana - Abacos
Dean -- Sunny warm windy
Wednesday 28 February 2018 - Great Guana – Fishers Bay
Yesterday we experienced a WILD Change in weather while transiting the WHALE Passage. We picked up the anchor at Manjack Cay, about 10 AM…. And slowly sailed south toward Green Turtle cay, and the Whale cay passage….( a very narrow cut from the Bahamas Bank out to the Atlantic ocean)… It was WONDERFUL finally SAILING... no engine noise... just 'ghosting' along on the banks....

WELL……………. In hindsight it would have been better to motor-sail that distance, FAST !!! Because behind us, and chasing us down at speed was a wild weather FRONT…. It hit us just as we were coming up to the Whale passage… We saw it coming so we had already reduced sail, and had just dropped the full MAINS’L… So we were basically a motor boat going through this narrow passage… at about 7 knots of boat speed.
The wind raged around us about 30 knots and once we were out in the Atlantic the AB took the winds and waves on the port quarter (left rear). We were safe, but the boat took on that Disney Land type of movement: slowly rising up and heeling to starboard then a turn, and wildly fast snap roll to port. That’s the type of movement that usually puts stuff on tables, and shelves immediately ON the FLOOR (lowest level of potential energy). WE had some of that… but all in all not BAD!
We anchored in Fisher Bay at Great Guana in windy conditions, but the sun was beginning to show itself in the afternoon. We’re at N26 40.046 W 077 07.321
We took the “lookee bucket” out in the dinghy (instead of snorkeling out there) to check the anchor SET.
It was buried almost to the hoop on the Manson…. So we were SET for the evening… The wind was steady all night long… and kept the batteries up to 13.00 volts or higher… (wind Generator)…
BUT this is not a good anchorage… for the coming westerly winds…(at near 30 knots gusts)… We’d be safe but uncomfortable…. SO we’re probably going to move today… or tomorrow latest… to another shore, or marina.
