Sail from Great Guana Cay to Treasure cay - STORMS

28 February 2018 | treasure cay -- abacos
Dean -- Windy and sunny
Wednesday 28 FEB 2018 - Sail (only) from Great Guana Cay to treasure CAY
We looked at the coming weather and decided that we needed a place to shelter from a WEST, and NORTHWEST BLOW…. Coming at us Late Thursday night, Friday, and sticking around until late Monday.
If you look at the layout of the Abacos (chains of islands) you’ll see they are basically laid out in a north South orientation…. And all the harbors, and safe inlets are on the west side of these islands…. Protected from the normal easterly TRADE winds…. (from the east)…. SO……..When a storm comes along like this one… with substantial West winds, then backing to the North WEST… there’s no where to hide… IF you’re NOT IN a protected anchorage, or harbor….
(normally you can anchor almost anywhere in the Sea of Abacos…. And be protected by the islands from the easterly “TRADES” ….) OK… that being said…. WE PULLED anchor this morning in a nice breeze, raised sail, and sailed to the northwest to Treasure Cay…. It has a wonderful protected harbor, But we’re two days ahead of the storm…. BUT we came into the harbor anyway… and took a slip…. $$$$
The moorings are all full at the moment…BUT we have a Plan in place with friends of Earl and Kathy, that are renting a condo here…. They and SEEKER will keep an eye out for boats moving OFF mooring balls, and we’ll run out and put our dinghy on the next open mooring…. (moorings being half the price that dock space costs.
BUT… the main thing is we’re INSIDE a harbor…and not bouncing around out in the Sea of Abacos for four days.
SO… if you plot these coordinates you’ll find us in the marina N26 40.413 W077 16.769
That’s slip L-9.
We had to search a bit for our dock Power cord… I think the last place we “plugged IN” was Barefoot Landing in South Carolina. WE don’t do a lot of docks (aka marinas)…
But it is nice to top off the batteries once in a while, using shore power, and not the Generator, and heat water to it’s hottest…. Etc.
Water at the dock is $0.30 per gallon… so we’ll NOT be topping up here… we’ll make our own water on the way down the Sea of Abacos in a few days.
They also charge for kWh used but that applies mostly to large yachts with AC units running all the time…
OK… time to relax… (touch wood)
