friendly fire -- remembering

Memorial DAY - 2018 - Monday -- Friendly FIRE
WELL...it happened, (not finally as I was going to say, because it has happened before, but...) last night's sleep was interrupted by memories...
We watched the "60 MINUTES" special on "Friendly FIRE" where a group of soldiers were accidently killed when a B1 Bomber, whose equipment was very sophisticated, but still UNABLE to detect the soldier's Infra-red helmet mounted beacons, dropped ordinance on their position.
NOT GOOD!!! The "60 Minutes" presentation went on to investigate the "army's investigation" as to distribution of Blame, and responsibility.... Anyway...
Last night, my mind went back to Vietnam...and re-lived every close call we had in the jungle, and rice paddies, with "support" from our own military....
We used a map / coordinate system, where we would set up a "huge" PRC-25 antenna (if we were "way OUT"...in places where no one expected us to be)... and transmit a 6 digit position that "headquarters" was supposed to log (correctly) into something, that would prevent artillery, or bombing runs (by B52's) from dropping ordinance on US.
This was the theory, anyway.... But, I remember one night, in particular that we were so close to a B-52 strike, that we could have read a newspaper by the flashes of light, IF we could have focused on the newspaper, (because at the same time, the water-mud-swamp that we were sitting on was rising and falling over a foot, after each concussion of the bombs... NOT a GOOD feeling being bounced around, by explosions... and wondering in which direction the bomb trail was going.... Away from or Toward us.

We also called in air strikes, occasionally, when we were pinned down by a superior force.... We'd set out smoke grenades to each side of platoon... (24 EM's)... Yellow on the left, Purple on the right.... But then we'd look up... and nervously watch the smoking disapate, and thin out going UP through the triple canopy jungle growth.... And wonder what the Pilots "actually" saw before they started their "Napalm run".... Most of the time it worked out... I remember once being so close to the napalm, we could have heated our C-Rations.... Not a good feeling....
I remembered one time we got pinned down, just after exiting the choppers in a rice paddy; so we're lying behind the paddy dikes, trying to look like rice.. .staying low... the LT called in artillery, but it was a "fire over friendlies" fire-mission... (the friendlies being US)... a "short-round" landed in back of us...(a short-round being one that did not have enough powder packs, or elevation to make it to the intended impact area); a piece of shrapnel wized by my head, only inches away... So I spent the next two hours digging it out of the rice paddy dike, next to my head.... I STILL have that shrapnel with me, on the AB, just to remind me how damn lucky I was...

There are many more incidents that I could relate... as the squad that I was assigned to, as a replacement, had all been killed as a result of "friendly fire"....
We used to really panic when the support would be from the South Vietnamese air force.... What a bunch of cowboys.... I'll explain that IF anyone wants.... But not here...
I guess that's enough said on this.... Have a great day.... Back to the cruising life. STOP remembering.
