CSY-44 Antigua - Hull 001

Sunday night -- St. Pierre Creek - Staging for ocean

18 November 2018 | St. Pierre creek -- off South Edisto river
Dean -- overcast
Sunday NIGHT…. Southbound - 18 NOV 2018
Long day yesterday… Left Southport NC before 0800… and headed out the inlet…into the Atlantic… The weather was supposed to be “our friend…”.. WELL……………. Long story / short… it was NOT our total friend… the wind started OK… but on the Quarter… (from the rear /side)… which gives most monohull sailing vessels a ride equaling a Disney RIDE… sort of roll, followed by a snap the other way…. Anyway… WITH sail up and sheeted in tight for stability… it was a weird day’s ride…
WE left Southport after a wonderful day (actually two) with the Brown’s, But I think I mentioned that already…
After we left the Southport inlet channel we came across a mono-hull sailboat named “big Blue”… They were heading north.. but their mains’l was in tatters… shreaded…. I called to make sure they were OK…(although I have no idea what I’d have done… if they weren’t)…. They got caught in the gale force winds that we just “sat out” at Carolina Beach… except they were at sea, and couldn’t get the roller furling mains’l to roll IN… broke a furling line… and in the process.. the wind shreaded the sail… they said they were going “for a much needed R&R”…
Second WIND (s/v – an Endeavor 43) had come down that morning and scooted out the inlet before Autumn Borne…. So we were sort of buddie boating…
By midnight… the winds had picked up to about 17 knots, and the seas built to 4+ with very weird periods, train directions… I.e. we were getting rolled and pounded… Second wind called and said they were going into Charleston… for some sleep…and recuperation… we agreed… except they were much closer to shore.. we were 13 or so miles out… so we had to negotiate the entire Charleston Entrance Channel…. From 0230 to 0430… in the morning… We finally anchored on the middle ground flats after taking down sail… at 0445 hours…. The sun was due to rise a little after 0530… not much sleep…
I was jittery from all the coffee…. Because I hadn’t planned on going IN… it was going to be an all-nighter, and the next day… so….
Anyway… today we got up, and went INSIDE from Charleston Harbor, down through the Wahpoo bridge, and inside (AICW) to where we are now… St. Pierre Creek… halfway to Beaufort from Charleston…
We’re staging for an early departure to the ocean tomorrow… and hopefully will go all the way to Brunswick GA… (fuel, and rest)…
Tonight we’re anchored at N32 32.389 W080 20.895 (in about 30 feet of water… deep but good holding…. (lot’s of chain out there…. Challenge in the morning….:) )
WELL… I’m working on about 2 hours of sleep… so this will be short. More later. (maybe)
