day after Thanksgiving... WILD sensory experience

23 November 2018
Friday -- DAY after Thanksgiving...
Good morning... Generator running; coffee perking; sun is up (at least for a short while).... Life is GOOD.
BUT, last night, after watching TV for a couple hours... Susan fell asleep; but I couldn't... got up turned the wind Generator OFF, because it was Howling outside (wind)....
Just as I turned the wind Gen OFF... the anchor chain made that "terrible" scraping sound (exactly the same sound as IF you're DRAGGING anchor chain over a ROCK bottom.... OH OH.... Then I realized something may have 'changed'....
Then I did what all captains would do.... Rushed up to the "SEE" where we were, and If, indeed we were drifting; WELL...................... At that point the current in the river was probably 5 knots of ebb current... (almost as fast as we normally motor); The dinghy was still out back... but painting wildly; and here's the MOST disconcerting thing.... The boat's around us... seemed to be moving in all directions... as we literally "SPUN" !!!! DAMN we are FREE!!!!
SO ALL VISUAL, and AUDIBLE (anchor chain noises) Senses are telling me.. "We're moving"....
BUT... common sense said "NO WAY"... "Trust the anchor gear (ground tackle)... we've been here for days; through tide changes, and two St. Mary's dance routines...."
So I turned on the instrumentation... sure enough, our tracks were within 80 feet of our anchor... (125 feet of chain out).... But meandering back and forth... 180 degrees... side to side.... WE WERE, INDEED, STILL CONNECTED TO THE BOTTOM... BUT IN THE MIDDLE OF A NIGHT TIME ST. MARY'S DANCE !!!
WOW... I sat in the cockpit for a long while... .watching and listening.... Went on deck to tie sail down, and secure some other stuff... but, Wow... what a sensory experience... not a good one... I assure YOU.
This morning is the Pancake breakfast... and flea market at Seagle's Saloon...
