Friday – 3 May 2019 -- Vero Beach – Staging to start trip NORTH
Wow… I can’t believe I haven’t written anything to the LOG // Blog in quite a while…. BUSY getting ready to head NORTH…
Not in Chronological order… Yesterday I changed the LUBE OIL & filters, in both the Perkins, and the Northern Lights Generator… One was needed, the other gratuitous, but always GOOD!!
Susan and Bunny (“s/v La Bella Vita” – 43 Endeavor Ketch) were "OFF boat" shopping… for stores, and stuff…. Pete was OFF trying to chase down a carburetor for his outboard motor (No JOY).
In the afternoon, John (Barbara from s/v “Spirit” – home port Buffalo, NY) and I were ON “La Bella Vita” trying to rid the boat of the sailing rig gremlins that seem to have plagued Pete and Bunny…
Turns out that the PO (Previous OWNER) of “vita”… had NEVER sailed this vessel…. Everything needs lubrication… and practically nothing was ‘rigged’ correctly…IF at all….
I don’t even know the “rigger” that inspected this vessel, (and in his case, I use the term loosely) but I’m “pissed” that he could have let Pete and Bunny sail away with the rig (halyards/ sheets, etc. ) in the condition they were IN.
The mains’l did have a 8 inch rip near the HEAD.. .(which is now patched); The mains’l halyard wasn’t even attached…. And is so stiff it hardly bent around the winch…(once rigged)….
The mains’l has now been raised… and it looks good, once Pete and I figured out where all the control lines were… (Topping lift; outhaul; reefing lines (not rigged at all ); etc.
In fact, the sail was looking so good… it began ‘drawing’ and we started to sail this 44,000 lbs vessel OFF the mooring…. “OOOPS…. Ease the sheet, PETE !!!!! We’re SAILING”
John Barbera, has been an absolute HERO the last few days…. Running us all over Vero Beach, in a car….
When he brought the ladies back to the “VITA”… He immediately dove into fixing the “headsail roller furling problem that Pete, and Bunny had on the way around South Florida….
The roller furling does WORK… .as it should…. But needs lubrication, and a slight adjustment to the lead IN angle to the roller…. (lines not rolling up evenly on the DRUM)….
We rolled the headsail in and out a bunch of times…. Successfully, and felt pretty good that everything will work for them on their way NORTH.
Autumn Borne seems ready to RUN…. (Touch wood here)… and both Susan and I are ready to start north…. We’re looking forward to a summer at Hop-O-Nose… and the seeing the folks there…. The islands (Abacos, Bahamas) were wonderful, but now we’re ready for some marina living….
If things work out right… we’ll see Donna Dailey (ex-cruiser s/v MOJO") today… and toss the mooring lines tomorrow (Sunday at the latest)… and start north….
OUR friends in Southport NC (Bill and Janet) may not be there… so we might bypass Southport, unless we need fuel, etc.
But we’ll definitely stop near Belhaven… and try to see Ondra and Nelson Gainey…
One of the first things we did when we got to VERO Beach is wash off the salt…. AB was covered… surprising, in that the crossing (of the Gulf stream) was one of the easiest ever experienced…. We didn’t wax the hull… but just washed it looks pretty nice…. WE’ll wait until the next “gulley washer”…. (rain storm) to really CLEAN IT…. And maybe catch some water (rain).
OK…. I know I’m leaving out all the VERO STUFF … walks to the Farmer’s market, and Dinner’s at Mr. Manatee’s, and stuff like that… BUT time to get breakfast, and start this DAY.
