HELL of a DAY at SEA, SIR !!!

5 NOV 2019 -- hell of a day at sea, SIR!!!
Let’s go back a day…. Monday we pulled up anchor in the Bay River, near Bayboro, NC… (near Pete and Bunny’s marina – Hurricane Marina, and Boat Yard)… and motor-sailed out of the Bay River, and into the Neuse River… (which BTW is a lot like Lake Erie – shallow and WILD)… 2 to 3 foot waves on the Neuse… got better as we turned and put our stern to the waves…
We anchored Monday night at “NELLIE’s anchorage”…. Just past the Moorehead city bridges…
N 34 43.16 W 074 41.46
We had to move once because of a tug operator and a barge relocation… but other than that it was quiet night.
This morning (Tuesday)…we got up at 0600 and were underway before sunrise….
Along the way today… while transiting the Bogue Sound…. We updated our charts, and used to the fullest… the features of the Aqua=Map Master program with all the corps-of-Engineers overlays… and lot’s of color for the shallows…. VERY NICE !!!
The total surprise of the day came right at the end…. When we approached the Onslow Beach bridge (operated by the USMC/ DOD)…. Over the course of the previous hour(s)… about 10 boats passed us in and after Bogue Sound…. SO……………….. the Onslow beach bridge opens on the hour and half hour… (scheduled)… BUT… as we came to the end of the firing range… there were all the boats that passed us… WAITING for the bridge opening at 1230 hours…. SO… a catamaran and AB sped up a bit… and damned if we didn’t close the entire distance before the operator began to open the bridge… I gave the thumbs up to the CAT captain…with a “I think we’re going to make this opening” YELL….
BUT indeed the surprise was yet to come.
The ten or so boats in front of us… passed though the bridge… and with us (AB and CAT) following only ONE boat LENGTH behind the 10th boat…. The OPERATOR of the bridge yelled into his MIC.. “I’m closing the bridge !!! YOU’ll ALL not make it… “ we were within feet of the fenders… and damned if he didn’t start to close the bridge…. Emergency STOP for AB, and turn right inside the fenders… The catamaran did stop and turn also… (GREAT JOB!!! )… So NO one was hurt or property damaged… BUT, there was NO need for that sudden closure…. When we were literally “RIGHT THERE”… at the fender system…
The operator said “sorry, the bridge has been open for SEVEN (7) minutes… and HE MUST CLOSE. Those are the RULES”
Wow…. Never heard of that rule before…. NO harm…. No foul… .So AB retreated backwards’ in the ICW… to wait for the next opening…. And WAIT FOR IT………………………. Wait…………………….
Along comes a fishing trawler, not ten minutes later… and doesn’t the bridge open for HIM… of course the CAT and AB went through with the fishing boat….. BUT JUST HOW IMPORTANT, THEN, WERE THOSE ORIGINAL 7 MINUTES ??????
Anyway…. We’re anchored at Mile Hammock Bay… N 34 33.05 W 077 19. 5 AND not 15 minutes after we anchored a WILD T-STORM blew through here…. PRETTY exciting DAY… like the title “ It’s a HELL of a DAY at SEA, SIR!!! “
