Wednesday 6 NOV 2019 -- Another WILD day on the AICW….another BRIDGE DAY
The Surf City swing bridge is now GONE… So this leg is “supposed” to be a Breeze…. WELL……………
We picked up the Hook just after sunrise, and motored out of Mile Hammock Bay… Basically ahead of most of the cruisers anchored there…. They were all cleaning their anchor chains (which granted are a mess from the sticky muddy bottom)… (We were prepared… for that)..
Anyway… the Aqua-Maps programs again proved to be very valuable in getting through the shoaled areas…. Wonderful maker of confidence !!!!
The first bridge that you come to, now that the Surf City is a high rise bridge, is the Figure 8 Swing Bridge… (supposed to open every ½ hour… top and bottom of the Hour…. WE timed our arrival perfectly !!!!! and as we pulled up to the bridge I saw a FIRE Engine cross the bridge to the ISLAND…. “CRAP!!!” YOU know what that means…. Until that Emergency vehicle returns to the main-land…. The Bridge CANNOT swing OPEN…. Lest it get stuck open, and the person for whom the emergency was called, dies in the Emergency vehicle ON the ISLAND…. SO……………………………… WE wait… and we wait… Then…
The Ambulance crosses the bridge to join the fire engine on the island… two E-vehicles !!! OH WELL…
Normally we’d just SIT still and wait… but there at the Figure 8 Bridge there’s a WILD current that pushes you toward the bridge… and fenders… SO… While some others “danced” back and forth in front of the bridge.. We turned and headed BACK up the ICW… calling the Bridge Operator and asking for a “heads-UP when the two E-Vehicles returned to the mainland….
It got pretty crowded there; as ALL the folks that we left “cleaning their anchor chains “ at Mile Hammock NOW caught UP to us…. GREAT !!! the more the merrier, to weave IN and OUT of in a high current situation…
We Waited about 45 minutes…. Motoring up and down… then the bridge operator let us through (after the E-Vehicles exited the island)…. OK… The next bridge was 5 miles away - Wrightsville Beach… I calculated the speed necessary to get there just before the “TOP OF THE HOUR” opening… with this current and wind condition… and set the AB’s speed….
Don’t you know that each and EVERY one of the sailing vessels and trawlers that we anchored with at Mile Hammock bay… RUSHED past us… to get to the next bridge…. Guess What ??? There they were when we closed on the bridge… doing the “bridge DANCE” and running aground….
I wonder if IT ever DAWNED on them, WHY I was dawdling along at 5 knots… (???) OH WELL…
Once we got through the last bridge for the day (Wrightsville Beach – opening on ONLY Top of the HOUR)…. We were free to set any speed to get to our mooring at Carolina Beach…
We used DOCKWA (app) earlier in the day to ‘reserve, and pay for’ the mooring…. And about 1-1/2 hours later they “CONFIRMED”…. SO…. At least we had a place for this night.
We’re on a mooring at N 34 02.84 W 077 53.38 --- The Trawler “Slow Cruisin’” is next to us… (from Catskill Marina – Lee and Linda).
Windy…. So Wind Generator cranking out amps….and “anchor down” drinks have been had… NOW DINNER !!
