rude awakening this AM - Beaufort to skull creek

15 NOV 2019 – Rude awakening this AM – Beaufort to SKULL Creek
The evening anchorage at Beaufort was a good one… peaceful, and quiet… even with the howling wind and rain… But one thing bothered us…. Because of the depth of water…we had a lot of chain out for a 4+:1 scope… but the sloop (unoccupied) next to us…. Seemed to have quite a bit more rode out… of Rope…. With something hanging off the stern (???)… could that be a secondary anchor… it was slack…HUMMMM (at that moment, anyway).
WELL…we thought we were far enough away ….. and ALL evening and ALL night that was the case…. BUT………………………
This morning with a FULL FLOOD tidal flow… the sloop did a slow motion touch on AB, but one that could not be ignored… SO at 0630 we got up… looked at the situation… started the motor, and backed easily away from the sloop… no damage to either vessel… our anchor chain just brushed into his toe-rail…. No other contact…. SO………….. Susan took the helm and kept us away from the sloop, while I pulled up the anchor… we did a slow search for another local anchorage…. Then said “The hell with it…let’s go across Port Royal Sound to SKULL Creek”…. (we’ve used this anchorage a couple of other times…. It’s sort of weird in that you’re in the middle of some wild looking grass patches… and shoals.. but in-between … deep !! 8+ foot tide here !!!!! WILD!
SO… we’re anchored again in SKULL Creek…. The good thing that happened this AM…with all the wind and rain….The wind Generator started to work again…. (????) Why it stopped … who knows…
SO………………but it’s still noisy… so I may shut it down anyway….
WE did hear from s/v Dalmatian this AM…. They’re looking at a Tuesday through Thursday weather window to get south…. From Wynyah Bay….
We’ll probably use the same window… We’re a lot closer to St. Mary’s Inlet than Dalmatian now… (being just OFF Port Royal Soundj)… and just above the SC / GA border…..
SO…. We’ll stay here and wait for that window…. (as long as this anchor holds….it’s quite the BLOW out there right now…. We seem stable but the tide is still rising … (nearly a eight foot tidal range here).
I may let out some additional chain….. Pause here…. I did let out more chain…. Over 130 feet out there now, and the tide is dropping… (thus increasing the scope). More later.
Anchor down at 32 15.14 N W080 44.69 Skull Creek after 13.4 nm of travel this AM (before that second cup of coffee).
