Autumn Borne Cruising

CSY-44 Antigua - Hull 001

Thursday -- GAM day... and FUEL day (again)

06 February 2020
Dean Perry | Windy ... STORM of most of EAST COAST... tail here
WOW…. WELL…yesterday, (and some of today = FUEL DAY(s))… Adding fuel by Jerry Can is tough, but simpler than breaking up the raft with this other vessel, here at the mooring field… Anyway… one or two more additions of fuel, and the AB will be FULL, once again… Always a good feeling…. (to be ready to move IF you have to)….

With that same thought in mind… (moving IF you HAVE to)… today is also “START THE PERKINS” day… and run to TEMP (warm)…. Prep to change the lube oil… (that is just 1 hour over the 250 hours recommended for oil change on that engine)…. SO………….. that’s also on the LIST!!

Nelson G. gave us some bad news yesterday…. His mechanic did a compression test on the cylinders of his (I think) Westerbeke diesel…. (readings of 20, 20, 280, 320)…. Ouch on the first two…. Sounds like a blown head gasket….BUT the mechanic said that the engine was NOT worth rebuilding… because of the extreme “lack of parts” for that particular model…. Double OUCH!!!

Now Nelson’s son, WILL… will come down if necessary to assist… and is also researching “rebuilds vs. NEW”….. But, Nelson and Mary “passed” on dinner with us on AB the other night… Said they were extremely depressed and might not be “good company”…. I’m certain that last part would NOT be true… but we understood.

John Barbera’s new engine IS supposed to be in the AREA… but as of yet HIS mechanic has YET to APPEAR on site…. Bummer… SO…………………………….. YOU can see why we’re going to start; run; take care of ; change OIL; etc. of our engine… This area seems to be “tough” on main engines….

One good area of information… Rhiannon came back to the USA from Crossing to Bahamas with “broken headstay”, but it turned out to be just a broken TURNBUCKLE at the bottom of the forestay… YEAH !!! STILL a pain, but a heck of a lot easier to fix… .SO they are now back to “looking for a new “crossing WINDOW”. Yeah !!!!

Today is Thursday GAM day…at 1600 hrs (GAM is a nautical term for when two ships (usually whaling ships) met at sea… they would raft up… and socialize for a while)…. Conversations and possibly music will be had, along with munchies… and of course beverages… of your choice.

SO……………… breakfast is over… I’d best get started with the day…. (this morning I already added a second T V antenna to the aft cabin TV…. Seems to work better than the first…. We’ll SEE tonight.
