Sassafras River to Annapolis MD

30 October 2020 | Windy Rainy
Dean Perry
The next morning we pulled anchor and set off south under Heads'l and motor....

Wind was with us all day.... NICE trip except for the FOG....Peasoup all day long!!!

Again AIS and RADAR were extremely useful... visibility was about 1/2 mile.... NOT BAD, but too little to relax at the helm....

The fog started to lift just as we passed under the Bay Bridge...Just north of Annapolis.

WE are the only boat anchored in WEEMS Creek... I guess the rest of the PACK, is already very far south....

we listen to their progress on the SSB radio each morning...

WE had a wonderful meeting with Deb Taber, a great friend....
Deb brought us supplies to fix the Perkins overheat problem....

Susan and I also did some shopping... while waiting for Deb... SO...I guess we're ready to head SOUTH...
as soon as "ZETA"clears out of here...

24 hours of rain yesterday...filled water tanks to overflowing...

Reedy Is. to the Sassafras River (in Chesapeake Bay)

30 October 2020 | SASSAFRAS RIVER --
Dean Perry | overcast and windy
We rose early at the Reedy Island anchorage, and left just at order to catch the EBB current in the C&D canal...(EBB rushes toward the Chesapeake Bay, from the Delaware)....

BTW... the catamaran that ran up on the breakwall was temporarily patched and made it (with USCG and tow boat US escort) all the way to the marina in the middle of the C&D canal....
with everyone worrying the whole way that the cat. would sink in the canal, creating myriad problems.

Anyway.... we caught the ebb current, and the ebb down the C. Bay... for a lovely trip to the Sassafras river....

anchoring at N 39 21.95 W 075 58.69
near turner creek...
Lovely anchorage...
The only boat (other than locals) anchored at the turn...
The S/v "Windfall" was close, but around the "S" turns....
(Windfall crew are friends with "SECOND WIND".)

Delaware bay --- Cape H to Reedy Island -

29 October 2020 | Reedy Island --- DE
Dean Perry | NICE but very windy... (wind against tide)
we left Cape Henlopen before the FLOOD TIDE because.... it's 59 NM to Reedy from Cape H... and you have to "cover the distance" matter if it's efficient or NOT...SO we left early...

We had a nice ride up the Delaware Bay...but the temp. of the engine ran 190 F (but steady) all the way up the Bay.... WEIRD!!!

When we neared the NUC Plant at the top of the Bay.... we heard lot's of activity on the VHF radio... A 42 foot long sailing catamaran had sailed up on the submerged breakwall of Reedy Island...and was taking on water...

A coast guard cutter, guarding the nuc plant, put three small boats in the water... with trash pump to keep the CAT afloat.... Tow Boat US was called....

SO....lots of activity when we got to REEDY...

WE did get anchored just before sunset...
but wild, and BUMPY night followed....
It was a pleasure to leave there in the AM...

Blog UPdate..... NOw in the Chesapeake Bay

29 October 2020 | Cape Henolpen DE
Dean Perry | Sunny
Obviously...Time has passed.... for those readers that frequent this web page.... we are NOW way past the NJ coast line....

Having anchored in the Safe Harbor at Cape Henlopen after the coast passage during the night of Thursday OCT. 22nd....

We had planned to go 'round with another vessel, named "Kismet"... (not the Kismet from the SSB contacts....these folks were pretty new at this off shore stuff)..... anyway... on the way from Atlantic Highlands to the Sandy HOOK channel, AB chose to OVERHEAT....WELL...not exactly OVERHEAT to the point of damage... but run "much higher temp than I would LIKE"....

SO we "exited "state LEFT"...and anchored at the USCG base at Sandy HOOK... where I proceeded to take apart the cooling system.
I did take a few pieces of debris from the system, but in didn't look BAD!!
(this by the way IS NOT GOOD)... when you find a problem you WANT TO FIND a cause...
(this was NOT the

So...we put the engine back together and left that afternoon The engine ran 23 hours at between 165F and 170F... SO... I have no idea why it overheated in Raritan Bay... ......????? )

anyway we anchored safefly behind the second breakwall at CApe Henlopen, and "VIOLA" to us was s/v Kismet...(having left the previous day)....

Anchored at NN38 47.77 W 075 06.04
Cape Henlopen, DE

We caught some ZZZZZ's.... then put the boat back in order... (wave action, and night passage dishes)....

The next day we caught the flood tide to ride up the Delaware Bay... to Reedy Island anchorage...

the strange thing is that all the way around NJ Engine ran COOL... but all the way up the Delaware it ran at 190F...but steady... (????)

Atlantic Highlands NJ -- Waiting for Weather

21 October 2020 | Atlantic Highlands NJ
Dean Perry | FOGGY...WARM
Autumn Borne is now anchored behind the breakwall, at Atlantic Highlands NJ...

we're waiting for a "little better" sea conditions (not necessarily "weather")...The storm, now located off of Bermuda, is pushing some large swells onto the NJ shore... (NOTHING that would hurt AB, but the boat can always take more than the crew)...

The water we're sitting in is dead calm this AM, but totally FOGGED in.... we can just barely SEE the breakwall, a couple hundred feet away.

Yesterday, I did some minor work on the Perkins Diesel.... I removed the Thermostat ('stat)...(The top of the 'stat was covered in a 1/8" to 1/4 inch of rust colored 'GUNK'...). I think that when the engine is HOT (not overheated) we're circulating BLOCK RUST... and causing an increase in running TEMP....
SO.... We'll try the NJ rounding without the 'stat in the engine... We tested it yesterday, as loaded as we could at anchor.

I then took the rear cover off of the main engine heat exchanger... and removed part of an "old" ZINC that had broken off and fallen into the bottom of the shell and tube heat exchanger.... It really wasn't large enough to cause a REAL problem... but removed it anyway....
The ZINC had already been replaced with new.

the last little item.... I removed and cleaned the Air Cleaner.... (our air cleaner is a perforated SS bucket, that basically keeps small dogs, and children out of the Perkins...)...

the testing of the Perkins went fine.... SO........... I guess we're ready to GO
'ROUND NJ as far as power.... (we'll see)...

the remaining part of the day, yesterday, was spent putting "STUFF" away, in cabinets, or in bags, just in case we get ROLLED a bit during the "rounding"

One of the possibilities this trip SOUTH was to take our daughter and grand-daughter with us on the trip down the Hudson, but our leaving of Catskill NY was so "disjointed".... we couldn't put "all the ducks in a row"...:( Bummer.

STILL here in Catskill NY

16 October 2020 | catskill creek marina
Dean Perry | cool and rainy now.... COLD tomorrow
WELL................. we're still here in Catskill NY; filling AB with fuel; water; food; etc.

WE missed the very "brief" weather window (less than 14 hours of WEST or NW wind) this WEEKEND.... and looking at the upcoming forecasts... on WINDY, SailFLOW, and Windfinder... we're not seeing a lot of possibilities of getting a decent ride around NJ....

SO................... I guess we'll just "stick here" for a while and do some additional boat projects... and see friends and family in the area....

and realize that we'll catch a little OF the NOV weather on the way south.... Later...

at least we won't have to fight for space in some of the anchorages..... HEHEHEHE :)

Sitting here with new heater ticking slowly along (maintaining 21*C in here).... SO that's a good thing.....
