lazy day -- Cocoa to Melbourne

18 January 2020 | Melbourne FL
Dean Perry | WINDY... (with SUN)
Lazy day today... Space-x launch delayed due to WIND... which was 24 knots right on OUR NOSE all day long going SOUTH...

SO... we decided to make it two (2) easy days to Vero Beach instead of ONE long one...

24 miles today... easy...
Anchored north of the Melbourne Bridge... for protection from the winds.. .and fetch..

WINDY anchorage north of Cocoa FL

18 January 2020 | Fat place in ICW - north of cocoa FL
Dean Perry | VERY very windy -- scrubbed space launch
Wow…. It’s been a long time since I’ve written a BLOG entry…. Why is that Capt. Ron?
We got caught yesterday, by a Bridge LOCKout (for traffic coming from NASA).... and had to quit motor sailing south before our planned destination... (Cocoa, FL)... We're actually between the bridges, just north of Cocoa.... in a wide, and deep place OFF the ICW.... good Holding... STILL very windy!!!
We’re anchored at N28 23.54 W080 43.80 (good holding – very important in this wind condition!!!! But still wide open to fetch….

(in fact that wind scrubbed this mornings launch of the Space-x rocket....
SO... today we'll have a "lazy day".... and only go a few miles South....SO that Sunday we can make it all the way to VERO and get there in mid afternoon, instead of just before DARK.
(at least that's the plan now).... :)
The wind blew steady 15 - 20 knots all night long... Gusts over 30.... (I was up at 0300 to check our anchorage, etc.) STILL blowing... turned wind GEN OFF.... too much noise... Good Charge, but too much racket....(when it goes in and out of self-protect mode).... AB was comfortable even in those winds... Guess that's an advantage of weighing 20 tons.
SO......breakfast is over... Guess we'll start moving South slowly.
I guess I’ll mention that night before last we anchored in our spot north of the Seabreeze Bridge (in Daytona Beach)… N29 14.056 W 081 01.41 we were all alone in the anchorage until about 1700 hours when a ‘coke-bottle’ boat… passed us.. .then literally “BACKED” into our anchorage space…. Close, but OK… They did the right things… asking us about our scope, etc. They never did “back-down” on their anchor…. That was a little worrisome, for a while… (Didn’t really know where they’d end up when their chain stretched OUT…)

Tuesday and Wednesday we spent on a mooring (South field 23)..at Saint Augustine… Where we had a couple great visits with some boating friends (Shane and Aimee – on 38 foot Morgan). We met them up north at HON marina…Catskill NY… Neat to find friends everywhere!!!
We did two happy hours, and one formal dinner… and one great music night…Shane also plays, but not acoustic… Yet!!! One of their favorite singer song writers is Tom Waite (me too)… so I’m going to try to learn one of their favorite songs… “Old shoes”…

Christmas in WNY

Drive to WNY -- from Georgia

16 December 2019 | WNY -- East Aurora, NY
Dean Perry | SNOWY.. cold
Monday, 16 DEC. 2019 -- Western NY
We’re NOW in Western NY, and driving the rental car… (a Hyundai – KONA _ supposedly an “UPGRADE” but very SMALL)…
When we left the Autumn Borne on Friday, Having picked the car up on Thursday, It was POURING rain… Deluge type rain… when we loaded the car…
We started for the north in that same rain… and it poured on us all day long. We drove to Rocky Mount NC where we stayed for the night… where we stayed at the home of one of closest cruising friends. The first day was only 464 miles…. The next day Saturday, would be 603 miles….to WNY.
We started out on Saturday, in a light rain… but soon ran out from under that front… and traveled the bulk of the day in Sunshine and moderate temperatures… (40-50F)… The traffic was moving right along except for around Washington DC… where some trucker missed an exit and ended up in the woods… causing quite the chain traffic jam.
The end of the trip was the most thrilling (for someone that lives on a boat, and seeks out WARM Weather every winter)… The RAIN started to turn to sleet… then snow… and then REALLY heavy SNOW… like “white-out” type snow… Normally, IF we were in our car…The Honda Pilot… I wouldn’t have even slowed down… but in the light-weight rental car… the slush began to “throw the car” from side to side… NOT a great feeling… SO… SLOW down we did… then the cars around us began to react “badly” to this weather too… sliding OFF the road… etc. OK… NOT GOOD, again…. Finally as we’re closing in on East Aurora, NY… on Route 390 / Rt. 36, Rt 77 and 354 the plows and sanders began to APPEAR… COOL!!! SO the very last 15 miles was decent… but the 50 some miles before that were pretty intense…with a very light-weight rental car (with all sorts of traction control devices, that were not really that obvious… and were flashing a lot of strange lights on the dashboard…. Weird !!!
(I’ll have to get out the manual while we’re here)…
SO…………… anyway… we’re here at the Pomerhn’s home….enjoying their company, and watching the BILL’s wind against the STEELERS….and clinching a playoff spot… Yeah!!!
Shopping is not done… But there’s a few days left….
Autumn Borne is “On the HARD” at St. Marys GA…. Safe… and plugged in… Although I did have to re-rove the electric extension to another YARD Panel… (hopefully a “safer” one)… The panel into which the AB was initially plugged into had a nasty habit of “tripping” a breaker during every RAIN Storm… NOT GOOD….

Water maker diversion VALVE - Tank OR JUG

10 December 2019
Dean Perry
The pic below is of the new location for the NEW (replacement) diversion valve for the watermaker's made water.

the OLD valve had the control handle break completely away from the diverter mechanism... so there was NO control as to where the water was going.. .(tank JUG, or No where)...

This location should work well.... mounted to the side of a drawer (box)... in the WORK BENCH in the engine ROOM....
(easily reachable while you're working the controls for the watermaker).

one more view of elbow - Generator wet Exhaust

10 December 2019 | St Marys GA -- SMBS
Dean Perry | sunny and warm 81F high today
One more view of wet Exhaust Elbow... after clean up, using muriatic acid.

the new batteries are wonderful... when you turn off the shore power for a while, or put heavy load on them... Then turn shore power ( simulating an ON-Board Generator RUN)... the BULK charging rate is VERY HIGH... (like 22 AMPs... then Quickly drops OFF... as the charger goes toward Absorption phase... the it times out into FLOAT MODE.... JUST like it's supposed to....

(The old batteries would sometimes take a good first charge (BULK)... but then sometimes only charge at a rate of about 11 AMPS... no Matter how far down they were drawn... (NOT GOOD)...

SO............... Today is Christmas shopping day... WE'LL see if we can make a dent ON IT...
without leaving the boat... (seeing as we have NO CAR.... YET )...
