Autumn Borne Cruising

CSY-44 Antigua - Hull 001

Changes to AB - this spring (2022)

19 June 2022 | Catskill NY
Dean Perry | cooler / and very windy
WELL.... we've decided to make some changes to the way AB is arranged for "coastal" passages...

We've decided to put the dinghy on the foredeck (that is NOT new)... but what is new is that we'll put it ON the Foredeck WITH the outboard motor ON IT.... and have it ready for immediate Launch IF we want.... sort of like having strong davits...
on the stern...

OUR stern has the Monitor Wind Vane (sort of making aft davits a PAIN...

Anyway.... to make room for the motor we've had to remove the life raft... But...considering that the life raft hasn't been serviced in years.... and we don't do that much open water cruising anymore.... we doubt it will be catastrophic...

the other change made to AB is we've purchased a WINCHRITE winch handle to make lifting the dinghy/motor much easier, and quicker...

SO.... we'll see how this combination of things work out this coming season.... I'm suspecting that It will make life much easier....

WE'RE BACK at Catskill NY - Marina life starts

05 June 2022 | Catskill Marina
Dean Perry | sunny - with cool mornings
WELL.... I've been very, very BAD at communicating on this web page this season ... That will have to change....

Because of the COVID restrictions to the Islands this season we (ON AB) elected to stay in Vero Beach FL.... for the season.... and to our JOY... so did most of our cruising friends.... So It was sort of like the islands BUT here in the States..
:)

It was nice that the Bahamas did finally reduce or relax the COVID restrictions BUT it was too late for us....

We had a strange trip down with some engine problems, but I got those sorted out....
and we still have a Perkins "over-warm" problem... but flushing the cooland system every few weeks seems to keep that in check....

SO.... we're back at Catskill Marina (in Catskill Creek) off the Hudson River....
The marina is WAY BEHIND in it's set UP for the season.... (docks put in IN the wrong order; no WIFI for the boaters; NO tent or furniture OUT; no grilles out for the boaters... etc.

BUT... we're safe; secured to a dock; have 120 dock power; and access to fresh water... SO.............. i guess it could be a lot worse, right ?

more later (the picture used is roughy correct except every thing is backwards this year.... we're on the other side of Brian.... )

air tank to blow out cooling water line

15 March 2022
Dean Perry
The other day a white Berry weed clogged the cooling water intake for our Northern Lights Generator...
Clogged to the point where I needed to get one of the scuba tanks below deck and into the engine room... and use the regulated tank pressure to "blow" the weed backwards and out the through-the-hull fitting...

However... now I've purchased a CO2 cartridge powered drain cleaning device.... very small but, ostensibly, very powerful...

COOL and WINDY here in VERO Beach FL

14 February 2022
Dean Perry
VERY WINDY today in VERO beach... FL... and much cooler than in the past few weeks.... 43F at waking Time... SO.... started the on board "diesel heater".... Ran that for an hour or so... to take the chill off the cabin....

the wind generator spun 50% of it's time "ON" today in "free-wheeling "self protect" mode..... wind 25 knots or greater...
SO....this PM... turned it OFF...
But solar still working great...

Saturday... things didn't work out so well with the Farmers Market walk... so I got out the 7 mil wet suit, and snorkel gear...and went under the AB...scraping the bottom.... Our bottom paint is so thin... after 4 years.... it has NO anti-fouling properties left in it.... SO... I think I'll be doing this scraping thing a few more times before we leave here...
;(

so.... Windy and cooler.... means inside projects and activities today
In fact I just texted and canceled our reservations at Mr. Manatees tonight.... With this NORTH wind we'd get "blown" there...but it would be a rough trip BACK to the AB....
(there's already white caps in the harbor, here)...

SO... perhaps we'll try for TAXes and Banking business..... :P

New Refrigerator and old water tanks = Problems

08 February 2022
Dean Perry
WELL... living on a boat is never like land dwellers think it is.... Saltwater, and constant motion take it's tole on everything....

The dobro is holding up well (touch wood here)... but I've had to literally GLUE the top and back to the GIBSON (with JB weld and boat epoxy)... but the sound of the Gibson (purchased the year I returned from Viet Nam (early 1970) continues to be GREAT.... .and as such I just can't part with it...

The water tanks (4) are suffering from age and use... SO we ordered four new ones yesterday...

The new refrigerator continues to COOL food and freeze things (in freezer)... but starts and stops randomly due to a BAD Thermostat...
SO.....we ordered a new one of those... PLUS a new controller (101N510)

The dealer said I could use my previous controllers the 101N212's but no AC provision... strictly DC power input...

SO.... boat life continues to be a challenge...

AB at Vero Beach FL --- AGAIN !!!

02 February 2022 | VERO Beach
Dean Perry
WELL.... it's been a strange year for the passage SOUTH.... WE were making fairly good TIME; around NJ, and UP the Delaware....

We stopped for a few days in Annapolis to see Deb T. (friend)... and reprovision the boat...

THEN...things started to FALL apart...Weather-wise... Two Gale Force storms...The first one we weathered in KINGSCOAT Creek OFF the Potomac River ( First time we'd ever ventured in there... it was NICE !!! and we were ALONE !!)

the second Gale force storm found us all the way down in Fishing Bay (near Deltaville, VA)... we put out the required scopes, etc. and weathered that storm well... Then things really deteriorated with respect to south bound activities.... That will take a separate POST...
