Read, knit, bake & hunker down in a storm!
11 July 2020 | Burnt Coats Harbor, Swans Island, ME
Carey Hotaling | Winds 25+knots, rain

Swans island off MDI is real Maine. We came to Burnt Coat Harbor once before and knew the nature of its politics. Luckily we are ignoring the news, even if we are moored off a dock with a giant LePage sign, we are able to admire the gritty hard working men and women on the lobster boats. Surprised at how many stern-woman there are here: Not owners yet...There must be 50 boats here, but most didn’t chug by at 4am as expected, due to the severe weather. The harbor is a tad choppy, but we are happy to pay the $25/night for the big mooring block and safety during two days of storms. Tomorrow being Sunday, they can’t go out waking us early either (however these dudes might not be rule followers).
Arrived after a pea soup motor sail from the flats outside my parents house on Deer Isle. So thankful to have met the nice owner Dave Goding. He was in love with the spot, fixed the house with the care to protect his legacy of place for his own children. It was more than could be asked for- he understood the need to come back, and he sails to outside Pretty Marsh outside his father’s summerhouse off MDI.
The lighthouse is a beacon you can walk to and the hike back along a trail through the park. We enjoyed the row, walk and moving our sea legs along a road and path checking out remote island life as we did.
The weather is not fully cooperating but we were in it for the escape and that is working well! We need to do provisioning soon, so Sunday we are headed to Northeast Harbor to their great dockside laundry, boat supplies and food all within walking distance. May take the folded bikes off for a bit of riding! Hunkering down to bake cornbread and brownies to go with hearty soup! No lack of eating on board:)
