Trafton Island

Sometimes when yo talk to other sailors about cruising the Maine coast some say “we zipped up from xyz to pdq Harbor and we sailed all day and night to get to our destination” my reply is, “Why? Where’s the fun in that?” The best part of cruising along the coast of Maine is exploring all the amazing places along the way.
Back in the 80’s Hank & Jan Taft started taking notes about all the magical places they visited when cruising the coast. Those notes became a fabulous book known as “A Cruising Guide to the Coast of Maine”. In 1994 an acquaintance through work, Curtis Rindlaub, took over as keeper of the notes and updates the guide every few years. This book has become our go to guide for all the wonderful places we haven’t seen - yet...
When venturing from Northeast Harbor towards Roque Island we stopped at a good halfway spot we’ve been before, Trafton Island near Milbridge, Maine. Trafton can be a nice sheltered anchorage if the wind is blowing from the south or southwest. We ended up there because we were expecting rain and thunder showers the next day. What we didn’t expect was a northeast wind to blow, rocking us through the night. Neither of us slept very well, so the next morning with full bellies of coffee and a hearty breakfast we headed downeast early in the morning.
