Costa Arriba
09 March 2014 | Turtle Bay Marina and Portobello
Winds North, Fresh
Today we sailed from Kuna Yala to Green Turtle Cay Marina, a distance of about 35 nautical miles. The sail was a pleasant beam reach with winds of 5-10 knots. There were two other boats making the same general trek, so we were able to gauge Away's performance, and ours, against the other boats.
The entrance to the Marina is downwind and narrow with a sharp turn just before a reef so we were grateful for the low winds. Even so, we were careful to watch on both sides for shallow water as we made the turn into the marina entrance channel.
Upon arrival we were met by the Marina manager, Yogi from Germany, and he and his assistants grabbed our lines and secured Away to the dock. The marina is new, but as of yet unfinished and with few boats in slips. Maybe in the future it will develop into a beautiful marina, but right now it seems overbuilt, and with many important details not yet finished.
The Marina has several boats lifted out, but their lift is not currently working so the boats that are finished and ready to go sailing are sitting on the hard with no way to get back into the water. That is really frustrating.
We enjoyed a nice dinner cooked by Yogi's wife, Maria Theresa, and made plans to visit Portobelo the following day.
