Another Mission
21 December 2012 | Puerto Escondido
Colin
Puerto Escondido is a large bay that is completely landlocked with the exception of a small channel about 200 ft wide that the boats pass through. It is considered one of the best hurricane holes in Baja. We got there just a few hours before a strong Norther hit and after some difficulty, managed to get our anchor set. Which was a good thing, because for the next 36 hrs the wind howled. We saw 39 kts at one point. I didn't sleep well that night...
Once the wind settled and we got off the boat, we explored Puerto Escondido. This place has a small but friendly group of boaters. I even saw a Ventura Sailing Club burgie in their club house. Unfortunately, there just isn’t much here so we decided to rent a car and go see Loreto about 30 kilometers away. We used the car to try a little geocaching, but after Wendy nearly got whacked by a Bimbo Bread truck on the road we figured it’d be safer to go see the mission and do some shopping. Turns out the Loreto mission is the foundation mission from which all the others, both Baja and Alto California, were formed. The church was beautiful and the museum had an impressive collection of 18th century artifacts. While in town we sampled a couple of excellent restaurants and strolled the plazas and malecon. Loreto is a pretty little town and we had a great day. Tomorrow we leave for Ballandra cove on Isla Carmen.
