Swimming with the whales

We've been here on a mooring in Neiafu almost a week and are having a great time exploring the town and sampling the local restaurants. Yesterday wedid an offroad island tour in quads that was really fun. The weather was beautiful, but there were still some muddy bits, so we had a blast, although we did crash into a tree... The day before, we went whale watching. The humpbacks come here to calve in the shallow waters. We saw over a dozen mother/calf pairs. They are very docile and allow the boats to get quite close, also the tour guides know how to approach without distressing them. Then we jump in the water and if lucky get to swim with them. We snorkeled with 3 different pairs of whales and it was truly amazing! Later, we snorkeled the coral gardens which was really beautiful. Tomorrow is church singing and a Tongan feast. Next week we'll drop the mooring and start cruising the local islands. Looking forward to some down time!
