Windy City
03 October 2014 | Lautoka, Fiji

From Ba Roads we motorsailed around to Lautoka on the NW side of the main island Viti Levu. Lautoka is the second largest city in Fiji and has a busy commercial wharf with a big sugar processing plant in full production. We set the hook in 50 ft at the designated anchorage behind Bekana island across from the wharf. There was only one other occupied boat here that seemed to be a permanent resident. Where were all the other cruising boats? We were anchored here for 3 days and enjoyed some provisioning and visiting the city. This is not a tourist city, so we kinda stood out. We also taxied over to Vuda Point Marina to buy a chart of the Yasawas and discovered where all the cruising boats were. The marina was packed. They also have an active boatyard at Vuda Marina with many boats on the hard and also lowered into cyclone pits scattered about the property. Here we ran into a friend from our dock in Mazatlan on Europa Star waiting for a haulout. Once we finished with Lautoka we were ready to move on. It had blown >20kts from the SW every afternoon which raised an uncomfortable wind chop and deposited ash all over the boat from the sugar refinery. On our way out, we peeked into little Saweni Bay to the south where we spied at least a dozen cruising boats holed up. Must be the overflow from Vuda Point. We didn't stop since we had a favorable wind forecast and were bound for Waya Island in the Yasawa group.
