Australia, part 3

In the final installment of our Australian adventure we took flight from Sydney for Hobart, Tasmania; about as down under as you can get.Hobart is a small city steeped in over two centuries of colonial history. We enjoyed several days here exploring the waterfront, visiting the museums and we even attended an historical re-enactment of a womanâs trial taken from Hobartâs time as a penal colony.Next we rented a car and for several days drove around the eastern perimeter of Tasmania stopping to hike and geocache at the many scenic landmarks.Much of Tasmania is large areas of nature preserve and we eventually ended up at a Tasmanian Devil rehabilitation center for a twilight tour.I always thought these things were cartoonsâ¦but it turns out they are real.In fact they are real loud and make a horrific racket when fighting over food.As much as we enjoyed the tour, the real excitement came as we drove the 20 km out of the nature preserve at night. The road was literally jammed with wildlife. There were 4 ft wallabyâs by the dozen hopping all over and honking the horn or flashing the lights only seemed to confuse them. There were wombats the size of small dogs and a variety of different Devils fighting over roadkill. There was even one unidentified hairy creature about the size of a large pig.All of these critters were absolutely fearless and prevented us from driving barely faster than a jog, honking and flashing the whole way.Quite extraordinary. All too soon our time was up and we headed for the airport and our flight back to the boat in Whangarei.
