Popping into Puerto Rico
03 November 2017 | Anfi del Mar, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands
As we have said on several occasions, volcanoes do not make good natural anchorages. You have to work quite hard for a place to stop. But stop we did, at Puerto Rico. The reception dock at low water springs proved to be an obstacle course with a sheer wall to climb and no ladder - we had to make our own rope ladder, in order to get to the office to check in and to pay our way in. Whenever you get the last berth in a marina it is never likely to be an easy one. This was no exception, but with good team work and plenty of fenders we made it with no bumps.
The marina was full of Norwegian and Danish boats – looked like long term livaboards. The town was full of scandawegians also. The place is like an amphitheatre of apartments around the harbour. So, finding ourselves in a cross between Spain and Scandinavia, we ate at the Indian – and very fine it was too.
Today we managed a bit of retail therapy, mainly for food supplies, and then departed for a journey of about ¼ of a mile to a nearby anchorage.
Today's picture shows our track for the day. This can be explained by the fact that we put in a couple of hours of safety drills doing our Man Over Board (MOB) practice and also practicing heaving to and deploying our Sea-Anchor drogue. All really good stuff for the team to work through.
In the afternoon we dropped the anchor in the bay at Anfi del Mar where we will spend at least one night.
