Dobbling in Deep Bay
16 February 2018 | Deep Bay, Antigua
We finally dragged ourselves out of windy Jolly Harbour (a jolly windy harbour) two days ago, before the boat put down roots. Having had a snorkel under the boat yesterday I can see it is doing its best to do just that - boat is getting a bit hairy. We give it a scrub every now and then to try to get rid of the worst of it, but weed and barnacles seems to grow quickly on the boat in these conditions despite our antifouling.
Headed north from Five Island Bay to Deep Bay, near St John's. Duncan has not sailed for quite a number of years but has retained the knowledge and was doing a fine job on the helm. This was KK's first outing in a sailing boat and she did great, learning fast. We are all loving the colour of the water around Antigua - a soft milky turquoise.
Deep Bay is quite a fun place to visit. Very protected, and the holding seems good. We tried some snorkelling on the north side but the water has a lot of sand fines due to the swell that is running at the moment so visibility was not so good, but interesting all the same. Dunx and KK climbed the hill to Fort Barrington whilst G&K tried to fix the outboard on the beach (using lumps of coral for hammer and pliers) after G managed to hit a rock with the prop during the snorkelling expedition. Looks like we have broken something in the gearbox so will need to deal with that at English Harbour. Note - thought the shear pin was supposed to protect the prop in the event of a strike but the shear pin just bent and transferred the load into the gear box - argh!!!
We are enjoying (and taking advantage) of having some avid games players on-board. Evenings are spent working our way through endless games of Bananagrams, Dobble, Cribbage and Sequence. Yeah!
