Goodbye South Carolina - Hello Georgia
17 November 2018 | Herb River, Thunderbolt, Georgia, USA
Awoke to a cold but lovely clear morning and headed on our southern way. First we had to get through a swing bridge, which involves calling up the bridge and getting them to stop the traffic and then they swing the whole thing open for you. They will do this on request and are nearly always happy to oblige (unless it’s rush hour in which case you have to wait a while).
So we jogged along through the bottom of South Carolina, through grassy marshland and more cuts and wiggles and shoals than we have seen to date, until we found ourselves crossing the Savannah River and heading into Georgia. As we entered Georgia we needed to go through a bascule bridge, where we were given a very warm welcome by the bridge operator. They always ask where the boat is registered.
Tonight we have stopped just outside Savannah and will go there for the day tomorrow for some sightseeing. We are anchored in the Herb River – another idyllic marshy spot, though less isolated than usual as we are really in the Savannah suburbs. We stopped off on the way in to refuel at Thunderbolt Marine – the village of Thunderbolt was so named after a thunderbolt supposedly split open a freshwater spring, back in Indian times.
Today’s nature watch: more pelicans, dolphins, geese and cormorants. Also an unidentified smallish white bird, that dives vertically after fish. We are now heading into manatee country but apparently sightings are rare.
