First Swim of the Season, and Happy Birthday Ian!
18 December 2018 | Bird Cay, Bahamas
Our bay this morning was tranquillity itself when we awoke. Turquoise blue water all around us, some lovely Bahamian beach houses and loads of small fish, and some larger ones having breakfast on the small ones with quite a lot of splashing going on. We had a fairly easy passage south down the Berry island chain and when the wind kicked in it was a perfect gentle reach - no complaints.
We were thinking of trying to explore the Berries a bit, but it turns out that the cays are mostly private and, whilst there are many charted anchorages, they all seem to come with limitations on holding or shelter. It is also super shallow (even by OVNI standards) for much of the area around. Added to that, we have some heavy weather coming in on Thursday / Friday that we need some cover from. So we are enjoying a last night at the south end of the Berry Islands and then tomorrow we will head over towards New Providence where we will hole up for a few days. K is already getting excited at the prospect of laundry.
Tonight's anchorage is tucked between Bird Cay and Whale Cay - totally deserted. Barracuda is sitting in 2m of lovely blue water. We dinghied ashore to one of the private islands and had a swim off their white sand beach - naughty or what - no one chased us off so I think we got away with it.
BTW - could not resist including the photo of the boat sailing across the rising sun - took this as we were heading into the Gulf Stream a few days ago. Not sharp enough for Camera Club but lucky to get the composition.
