And then there were two
25 January 2019 | Staniel Cay, Bahamas
Wish I had taken Alasdair’s suggestion and asked our readers for ideas for where to find the phone. It was a grey phone sitting in the shadow of a grey winch with a light covering of grey rope making it near invisible, despite the fact that it was right by the companionway – that’s our excuse anyway.
After a very settled night in Pig Bay, we covered the short distance to Staniel Cay and dropped the hook on the sand bar by the settlement – more turquoise blue water. G and Ailie wanted to snorkel the Thunderball Grotto but the tides were wrong, making it a really dangerous entry; however there was a super site on the other side of the islet that provided excellent corals and fish, so it was a good substitute. Then a little book time on the nearby beach, before lunch at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club. Plenty of nurse sharks to see at the feeding station by the marina. Then it was back to the boat and a quick tidy up before delivering Ailie to the airport by ding, as she makes her way back to Nassau and on to London. Staniel Cay airport has to have one of the best departure lounges – it is just a roof on stilts. Security? Well, there’s a chainlink fence between you and the planes – with truck-sized gaps either end. We will miss Ailie lots; it was great fun to have her on board and we’re looking forward to the next time she can join us for a trip.
So now it is just G&K, which presents several issues. 1) Where do we go next? We have no plan. 2) What to do about the watermaker? We still don’t have one but we might be getting closer (more to follow). 3) What will the scales say in the morning? We really need to reinstate the non-visitor diet.
