Visiting Ngarumaoa village
19 June 2020 | Raroia Atoll, Tuamotus, French Polynesia
Today we broke away from our lovely settled spot at the NEthe sun is in the wrong direction, as you are totally reliant on seeing through the water to see the boomies. If there is a strong reflection you can't see them.
Anchoring down at the village was a new experience for us. Here, seems to work well, but we will wait till we have spent a few nights like this before we decide.
There are about nine boats down here, including some of our friends from our last anchorage. The village here is a very quiet and remote community living out on the edge. The houses are quite simple, and there is a shop, a primary school and a church. The supply boat came in yesterday - we think it was its first visit in a month - so we managed to buy a few provisions. There seems to be a pearling industry working the atoll off the village, from a little work camp just outside. What was notable on landing here was how super-friendly everyone was. We had a big 'bonjour' and a wave from everyone we passed, as well as a taste of poisson cru from two local fishermen.
One of our biggest challenges here is getting any decent wifi connection; this is why you are not seeing any pictures on the blog at the moment. We should be able to add the last couple of weeks' pictures when we get to Makemo (the big smoke) next week. It also means that we have not had any e-mail for a couple of weeks, so we apologise if you have sent us anything and we have not replied. These blogs currently go out via a satellite phone.
