The next days or weeks are going to be dominated by the weather so we thought we would give a bit of an explanation as to what is going on. The weather between here and New Zealand is a bit of a tactical challenge. It is dominated by pressure systems sweeping to the east. High follows low follows high follows low. The fronts associated with the low pressure systems can be pretty rough if you encounter them too far south towards New Zealand. So you want to meet the front about 500 miles north of New Zealand.
Add to that that we want the passage to take about 11+ days when really it's about an 8 day passage. If we arrive after 11 days then we don't have to be bussed off to Managed Isolation in Auckland. A good outcome would be that we can stay on the boat but it's not sacrosanct.
So the game is to anticipate that a weather window is coming, leave a few days early to use up some days whilst sailing between Fiji and New Caledonia and then, when things are lining up, to start to sail south to meet & cross the front and then head for the finish before the next front comes through.
So if you are tracking us and see us sailing around aimlessly for a few days fear not.
