We have now reached Batam Island with a few days to spare before going into Nongsa Point marina for check- out from Indonesia. The southern end of Batam is a mosaic of small islands with a maze of channels woven through, and quite a few reefs. But it is fairly navigable, as long as you have a good satellite picture. Yesterday we found our way into the tiny village of Piayu. There is a nice protected channel to anchor in between a small green island and a friendly village with some excellent floating fish restaurants. Having been on the road for some days (and low on all supplies) we went straight ashore for lunch. Access involved tying the dinghy alongside and then scrambling over the railings. They have fish pens in the water around the restaurant, and pick out the fish fresh for each customer. It was the best food we have had in Indonesia and all the better for the view of three sea eagles circling slowly over Barracuda.
