Shipwreck Snorkelling in the BVIs

28 February 2010
Snorkelling in the BVIs is pretty wonderful. There is such an array of beautiful coral which forms a stunning underwater garden. We saw lots of colourful fish, sting rays, turtles and barracuda and fed many more from our boat post the Anguilla 'Barry' incident! One amazing snorkelling site was over the shipwreck of 'The Rhone' a Royal Mail steamer from Southampton that was wrecked in hurricane in 1867 and over 200 men onboard drowned - pretty eerie stuff and quite incredible to see the wreck in so well preserved in the depths. Ruby has now joined Rex in the ability to dive down several feet to pick up treasure whilst we are snorkelling - sadly the Rhone was a bit too deep to reach (they were quite sure there would be treasure onboard!).

After the snorkel we set sail on BattCat and saw a huge ray leap up out of the water probably chasing some tasty prey - an amazing and uncommon sight and what a splash!
