Hi from the Beautiful Coast of Colombia...

Lastnight was the storm from hell!!! We started out the evening by motoring our of our beach stopover and watched as the clouds built up around us! All towering black menicing clouds! We watched two waterspouts form out in front of us then disappear... crazy!

We motorsailed under a storm front and made good way with the high winds, but then once we got on the other side the winds dropped to zero again. Start the motors again....

Chad was on shift steering us towards Panama when he woke me up... "Dad! There is a boat approaching us, and he's getting CLOSE!" so, I jumped up and took a look, sure enough, this boat was about 100 yards off our stern! I yelled to Dad, "Dad! we have company!!" So, all three of us were up and getting ready for PIRATES or what ever... Dad hit the boat with the spotlight a couple times and the boat veered off and left us alone! Whooo! That was strange! Then about 20 minutes later another boat was SPEEDING towards us yelling and flapping arms at us! Just when we figured out they wanted us to stop, our boat came to a screeching stop!!! I yelled "Dad, shine the light in the water!!" "SHIT!!!!!! We are in a fishing net!!!" Chad was yelling "stop the engines!" The fishing boat with about 6 guys powered up to us and were yelling and pointing.... of course the Peterson Clan can't understand a lick of Spanish, so the American way of pointing and cursing ensued!!! The fishing boat decided to try and pull in the net while we stayed stuck to it like a spiders web! I decided to strip down, put on my mask and dive knife and jump in! We just happend to be in an area where a river dumps into the sea, so the water was as dark as coffee, plus we didn't have a dive light! After about 15 or 20 minutes of dorking around underwater strickly by feel, I got us free and didn't have to cut any of the net! Thank god for that! So ADIOS!!! we go!

Thirty minutes later all hell breaks loose on us! LIGHTING all around us! Heavy rains, strong winds! We were putting the sails to bed when I looked up with my headlamp and saw this hawk making a landing on my head!!!!! I waved him off a couple times then he decided to make an emergency landing on our spinning windgenerators! It was too late, we didn't get the windgen off in time and splat! The poor guy didn't have a chance!:( So the rest of the night was holding on for dear life and praying we didn't take a direct hit by lightning!

Today was flat calm all day! yaaaa! but no wind!!! boooo! oh well, we are motoring and jumping in the water and trying not to roast. Life is good today!

Cheers from the Three Amigos!oct

Here's a few shots of prepping the boat for the long ride NORTH to Gig Harbor, Wa. It took about 5 hours to prep and load her up.

Here's a few shots of my 1985 28 foot Bristol Channel Cutter (BCC) built in Vancouver, BC. She's a full keel fiberglass hull with teak and mahogany wood throughout. She's powered by a Volvo 28hp diesel.

I had a great day learning how to sail my BCC. The learning curve was a little steeper than I had anticipated. The day ended pretty crappy... I couldn't get the engine out of gear and I plowed into the back side of a large powerboat in the slip next to me. OUCH!

This was the first day on board Junessa. I looked in every corner on board and climbed to the top of the mast! I had Chinese food and Corona Beer then feel asleep to some beautiful candle light and music.
