Liverpool River, Maningrida
07 August 2011
Sunday we left at 6:30 for Liverpool River and the Aboriginal community of Maningrida, again we had to motorsail most of the way, we were able to sail the last 5 miles with the NE seabreeze into the anchorage in 17 knots! We went ashore and Kieran found a group of locals to play footy with on the beach (finally!). They were really nice kids, shared the ball around, helped us with the dinghy, showed Kieran the fish and crabs on the beach, even taught him some of their dialect. There is another boat anchored here waiting for a mechanic to fix a problem with their engine, they told us that there is a 3.5-4m croc that has been hanging around the back of their boat!! The local kids didn’t seem to bother about it though, running in and out of the water, fishing at the waters edge, they must know a lot more about the crocs behaviour then we do, as when we asked them ‘Is there big crocs here?’ ‘Oh yes!!’ they answer with nods. Tomorrows destination depends on the wind. The forecast is the same every day, ESE 15-20 knots, we have had ESE 5-10 knots with a 15-20 afternoon ENE sea breeze, so we’ll see what tomorrow brings.
