A Taste of Cruising Mexico

Vessel Name: Journey
Vessel Make/Model: Passport 40
Hailing Port: Ventura, Ca

About: We're home ported out of Ventura, California. Jeff is a software engineer and Dori is a special ed teacher. We're both on sabbatical from our carreers or early retirement. We're not too sure which and don't really care. Cruising fits us real well right now.
Extra: This is our third extended cruise to Mexico. I guess we like it there! We hope you enjoy reading this journal of our cruise.

Another Taste of Mexico

This is a photo from back in 2008, the first time Journey went cruising to Mexico. The boat was full and overflowing with guests come to wish us Bon Voyage before we set off on our travels. It is a memory we still cherish.

Home Sweet Home

Journey has been home for just over a week, after sailing into Ventura harbor on the Fourth of July.

Survivors of the Un-Bash

It seems there is no rest for the weary. (OK, after resting four days, I guess being weary isn't an excuse anymore.) Anyway, we've received a few 'gentle' hints from some impatient readers. They've noticed that our position reports show we've reached San Diego, but our blog hasn't been updated to reflect [...]

A Night at Anabel's

Last night we debated whether or not to leave Turtle Bay early this morning, but one day's rest just didn't put a dent in the sense of exhaustion we were feeling after this last week. So we put off our departure until tomorrow. Our reward for making that decision was spending this evening at Anabel's. There [...]

The Half Way Point

Arriving at Turtle Bay is a milestone because it means you've reached the half-way point in your trip up or down the Baja. Several of the boats who left Cabo with us had a little celebration by having a scrumptious potluck lunch hosted by Mary and Jack on S.V. Oriana. We also attended to mundane details [...]

The 'Un-bash'

With one-third of the trip north completed, the good news is that we haven't really been 'bashed' much at all. The closest we've came was the passage around Cabo Falso early Saturday AM which Jeff described in his last post. As he mentioned, once that was behind us, it was all motoring in calm seas [...]

One Perfect Day

17 November 2011 | San Juanico
Dori
I told Jeff that our final day in Bahia Concepcion was as close to perfect as you could get. We moved from Bahia Coyote to Santispac just for a change of scenery. Santispac was a nice spot for a run on the beach. I followed this up with a bit of kayaking while Jeff went for a swim. Blue skies and almost no wind were the order of the day. Water temps of 77 degrees were too hard to resist, so we had another swim that afternoon.

We also got a chance to catch up with our new friends, Leah and Jonathan. They'd been working on their boat, Brio, at the boatyard in San Carlos when we were there and had made the crossing the day before. It was great sharing drinks with them, along with swapping DVD's, recipes and watermaker tips.

To top the day off, Jeff took me ashore for dinner at the little beach restaurant. He didn't even make fun of me when I ordered my usual-- a hamburger WITHOUT all the trimmings. I'm sure the waitress was thinking--'crazy gringo'--as she came back several time to confirm that I didn't want 'lechuga', 'cebolla', 'queso' or 'mayonesa'. Maybe I am crazy, but when it comes to my burgers, I'm just a 'carne y pan, solo' kind of girl.

Leaving early the next day, we pointed the bow south towards San Juanico. Although light in the morning, north winds about 15-20 soon filled in. Journey got to fly her spinnaker for the first time this trip. Once the winds settled in we were headed dead downwind. Deploying the jib and mainsail in a wing-on-wing formation, we made the 55 mile trip in about 8 hours.

Today we are sharing San Juanico with only three other boats and a party of kayakers who are camped on shore. The morning was calm and sunny, although the north wind picked up in the afternoon to 20 knots. But we are anchored securely and since I ran a couple of miles and did some kayaking already, I'm content to sit on the boat and let the wind generator five the batteries a little extra charge.

We should be ready to make more southward progress in a day or so.

Yelapa is a unique little hidden away village on the south side of Banderas Bay. No roads reach it and the only way to get there is by water.
