Block Island
09 August 2012 | Block Island
We arrived at Block Island at 5am this morning. We have come about 550 miles over a bit more than 3 days - which is excellent, especially given the winds have been not particularly cooperative. We have done this route twice before and both times were able to wait for and sil on northerly winds, but this year that has not been much of a hint of northerly winds - instead light and variable from other directions. Our new Doyle code zero has gotten a work out (about 50% of the time) as has the motor (mostly the other 50%). That's too much motoring but seemed the only way to get done the track this year.
We are going to sit at Block a while in the hope that a 36 hour northerly will materialize sometime to get us to the Delaware bay. If after a while still no northerlies materialize we will have to go to plan B - light wind upwind.
I was impressed and grateful with how courteous all the powerboaters were in the Cape Cod canal when they went past Hawk. It was also very fun sailing down Buzzards bay on Wed night and seeing all the Wed night racing fleets out. There seemed to be 5 or 6 fleets, all with a decent number of boats - just good to see such sailing activity.
