champagne sailing

We came thru the Cape Cod canal yesterday, flying along as it was timed to be with the 3kt current. The forecast was for 2.5 days of 5-10kts starting from the E and rotating to the S (reach to deep run). I had the rolling code zero hoisted and set and Hawk was sailing just perfectly at 6-7kts in flat seas under a bright sunny shy, with temps in the low 70's (f) and seemingly zero humidity.
That lasted until about 4pm, when the wind started building up to 20kts. The zero could handle that but we were now going too fast and would have an 0:dark30 landfall, so we switched to wing and wing with the working jib. . . . still doing +7kts with still reasonably flat seas.
That lasted until about 1am, when the wind started dying again, all the way down to 5-8kts and rotated around to the NW. That became a close hauled to make my course, but Hawk could still lay the destination and was still doing 5-6kts.
We tied up to a friends mooring buoy at 5am, after one of the most pleasant sails in a while, but . . . it was a vivid reminder that while we sometimes talk about accurate 5 day forecasts, sometimes its not accurate even for 12hrs.
