Man O War Cay

12 April 2015 | Abacos

Hello Abacos!

In one week, Doug and Donna Faust will join us to bring Big Surprise back to Florida. We look forward to having them with us as they are incredible sailors and mechanics. Something is sure to break and I know they always have duct tape in their pockets.

Swimming with the pigs

It has been uncommonly windy in the Bahamas over the last couple of weeks. Strong easterlies at 20-25 knots with swells over 10 feet have limited everyone’s travels. Emerald Bay Marina, just north of Georgetown, is a beautiful place, but I find myself getting used to hot showers, a fitness facility, [...]

The Green Flash

Does the Green Flash really exist or is it an illusion created by happy hour cocktails? All I know is that we saw several during our stay at Long Island.

The Other Long Island

The days are getting a little slower, and that's just fine.

From Here to There

22 February 2015 | Between Staniel and Georgetown
Still here, still having fun. We’ll try to not make this too travelog-ish, but probably need to bring our friends and family up to date with where big Surprise is. In the ideal world, we might do blog entries daily, but sometimes reading a book takes precedence. Or more likely, there’s not internet or cell phone access where we are. Linda day dreams of a sat phone device so we can talk to our kids any time any where. Maybe next Christmas.

With some reluctance, we left Warderick Wells (favorite spot to date in the Bahamas) bound 30 miles or so south to Staniel Cay. Another front was coming so we needed to get some place semi-protected. Staniel fit the bill for a couple days. We did go slightly stir crazy not being able to get off the boat due to weather, but the further south we go, the more flexible we seem to get. We did get on to the island a couple hours after the weekly freighter (very modestly sized, that one) so there were some fresh vegetables to be had at the little store. More to the point, Staniel Cay Yacht Club has a great bar. Beyond fresh vegetables, a highlight at Staniel Cay was witnessing, or at least listening in via VHF, the anchoring dance amongst the cruisers as the front passed and the wind shifted. It’s just a fact of life down here.

We’ve been planning our travel and watching the weather with an eye to arriving in Georgetown to pick up our friends the Breens on the 14th. Little Farmers Cay was an easy 15 miles for the next leg, and that proved to be a nice, quiet little place. Total population well under 100, and the home for two extended families for the last 170 years. Not much protection from a cold front, but on the other hand an excellent Cut for moving out to the deeper water of Exuma Sound.

On Friday, we left the comforts of both Little Farmers, and the Exuma Banks, for the 30 mile trip down to Georgetown. It was a nice sail, and we arrived early afternoon at Emerald Bay Marina. The choice of the marina was driven by a desire to do laundry and fill a water tank. Turns out to be nice place, and a little more convenient than Georgetown for picking up the Breens from the airport.

More to come soon.
