Last night we stayed on anchor just north of Burliegh Falls on Lovesick Lake. We were treated to a great sky in the evening.

Beginning at Peterborough the Houseboats are everywhere. As they are rented the skipper's skills very greatly. We let them enter the lock first, bump around and get tied up, before we enter.

Built between 1896 and 1904 of reinforced concrete, the Peterborough Hydraulic Lift Lock was one of the worlds largest concrete structures and an engineering wonder. It still is. The lock raises and lowers boats in two water-filled steel chambers. Each of the chambers is 140 feet long and holds 228,000 gallons of water weighing 1700 tons. The two 7 1/2 foot chamber rams are connected in a closed water hydraulic system. Any movement in one chamber must force and equal and opposite movement in the other chamber. To transfer boats the upper chamber is overbalanced by taking on an additional 1 ft of water. The upper chamber is forced down while the lower chamber rises.

View from the top of lock 21 gives the illusion of an infinity pool.
