Thunder? Earthquake! No Tsunami!

17 July 2015 | Bequia (pronounced Becway)
Glenda and Jay
Jay and I were sitting down having a lovely late morning tea, was that thunder we heard? We looked around couldn't really see any large black clouds, could have been some off in the distances going away from us. This happen 3-4 times but we thought no problems as it was not close to us.

Woke up this morning to find that it was actually large earth quakes North East of Barbados, which is about 50 NM east of us.

Luckily no tsunami. We then discussed what we would do. Me I would take the dingy head for shore and the many hills around the place. Jay would take the boat out of the harbour and head for open sea.
Needless to say neither of us would have had time to do either probably.

We had an interesting time when we first arrived here in Bequia. We anchored, checked the anchor, in coral sand not fully buried but seemed ok. Then for some reason I was checking our position about 1230am, because of the grating sound the anchor was making and realised the anchor had dragged, probably 100metres. Missed all the surrounding boats thankfully. We reset the anchor in roughly the same place only to drift again and hour later. This time we headed well out so if we dragged we would hit nothing, we were also looking for better sand. It was a long night but we did not drift again. We checked the anchor in the morning to find it was almost fully upside down! Two inches of one of the side flukes was embedded in the coral sand, we couldn't believe we were holding. Jay cranked the boat up to 2200 revs in reverse but it did not move, we were hoping it would turn over and settle in. Even though it seemed quite stable it was not a good feeling knowing it was upside down. I took the dinghy and headed off looking for sand, found some close to the beach. This area is known to have people board boats but we are now fully locked up and that was better than drifting. It was also a much better snorkelling spot.

The photo is from the walk to Peggies Rock which took an hour, climbing pretty much straight up, to get to. It had a great view back to the harbour were the boat is anchored but the better photo is on the camera.
