Fin do Mundo and a time honoured tradition
19 June 2015 | Cabo de Sao Vicente
Under a bright orange melting sun set, we approached the 'end of the world', the famous Cabo de Sao Vicente. In Columbus' time, the sailors feared this most south western point of Europe, not knowing what lay beyond the horizon.
It is the place where St Vincent was buried and in deference, it is tradition to 'dip' the ensign on passing the point to ensure safe onward sailing. We dipped both Dad's ensign from the spreader, Iz doing the duties. We also dipped the U.S. flag from the staff, Tammie Jo, doing the honors. Fantastic job ladies!
This really felt like the end of the trip, although we still had the 20 mile run to Lagos, the official landing point for the Rally. We arrived just before midnight at the customs jetty at Lagos marina, and cracked a bottle of fizzy!
The end of an amazing adventure.
Thank you to everyone who participated!
