Four Word Pictures

13 March 2013 | Ballard, WA
Roy / It's finally gotten around to raining, ...all day.
So, here's something for the creative writing critics out there. They, at least, will probably be thanking God that I'm not posting another project. I wrote these "word pictures" as I've called them, quite some time ago, but it would take me too long to get out of the technical mind frame I have been mired in to come up with any new originality right now. Apologies to my three long-time fans for that.

The Waltz

Dancing, turning, the wind is her partner. A slight press in the small of her back, wordlessly says, "This way, ...turn this way." She responds, swirling her white skirts in the breeze. The warm sun on the petticoat of foam at her bow catches the eyes of the other dancers on the floor. A few whisper a comment to their own partners, "Aren't they beautiful together? Aren't they a pair?"

Prize Fight

Raindrops the size of fists advance in gray flurries over the bow, propelled on uppercuts, jabs, and haymakers of wind. The sailors lean into the gusts beneath sails that have been reefed and furled into tight forearms against the attack. They feel the blows, but their hearts soar with pride as their courageous vessel faces the onslaught.

Day's End

Gold trimmed clouds hug the Sun goodnight, their hearts ablaze with rose against the deepening blue. Bright amber reflections trap the silhouettes of sails upon the water as the drowsy Sun descends to his resting place beyond the horizon. You can see the Ocean's shifting folds as the tired god pulls the covers over his head. "I must sleep now," he murmurs in his soft, sea-swept voice. "Sister Moon will watch over you as I rest for the coming day." One last wink of his emerald eye and he is gone.

Into the Night

A skimmer carves its narrow arc in the moonlit water. Only inches aloft, the bird dips and opens its scimitar beak to slice the mirrored surface, severing the golden sabers of light that plunge into the heart of the shimmering bay. The bird's flight among the nodding yachts is noted by few but those whose evenings pass in solitude and quiet, marking both their joy and their sadness by such fleeting wonders as this.

About:
Mabrouka and I have been partners in crime since October 1998, hanging about in West Coast waters, first in San Diego, then in Seattle. All of that time we've lived together aboard. [...]
Extra:
I've called this blog "Blessed Lady" because that's my preferred translation from Arabic for "Mabrouka". She's a 1980 CT-41, one of several clones of the original Bill Garden design Mariner ketches. At 50 feet from the tip of her mizzen boom to the tip of her bow sprit, she's 16 tons of [...]

This is of Swan as I would also like to have known him, ...cigarettes, cameras and wine.
