IN THE WAY OF A FIERCE LINE SQUAL!
06 April 2011 | FERNANDINA, FL
We crossed the stream with some of the strongest winds in which we have sailed for a prolonged period (24 hours). The winds were 26 knots and the seas, from the stern, were 8 ft with the occasionqal 12 footer that apparently wanted to be in our cockpit, rather than outside where it well belongs.
We went into Ft Pierce and then up the ICW to St Augustine. After a day, we went outside to Fernandina, the northern most city on the Florida's eastern coast. That night when we tied to a dock, a line squall went through at 05:00 with loads of lightning.
The wind speed topped 53 knots (61 mph) and shoved the boat violently up opon the concrete dock. (The actual wind is the red line. Blue is what was projected).
She hit hard against the dock for about 3 or 4 minutes and then it was over. Unfortunately, the lightning was so violent that it was impossible to go out on deck and adjust the fenders. It is very interesting how short a duration the burst of wind was. But while the boat was slamming, it felt like a very long time.
All three of us are safe and the damage to the rub rail can always be repaired.
