UK - Portsmouth - new rig
13 April 2012
Biting that bullet - again
Nothing is cheap in sailing and two masts are better than one when it comes to hanging out the washing , but bloody expensive when it comes to changing the wire rigging and replacing the lamps !
Yet another cautionary tale:
It went something like this, oh bugger the halyard has worked loose and is chaffed , mmmm its really old and half wire and half rope, ill get a "professional" in to take a look.
(Enter stage left) evil rigger from Kiwi rigging (sounds of evil laughter and boo's from the audience) I can change those for you the evil rigger says whilst rubbing hands together, I can make it all good for you (more evil laughter and booing from the audience)
You'll need to replace the sheaves at the top of the mast says evil rigger, as the new rope halyards wont fit on them properly, ok says I seems like a plausible explanation.
So evil rigger and henchman are left to do their evil deed while the admiral and myself take a walk, later that day kind hearted yachtie (played by attractive sex god) rings the evil rigger and enquires as to progress.
Evil rigger says its all done , we have cured the world of all things evil and heres the monstrous bill ........ OUCH says I
Oh says evil rigger, you standing rigging is sh*t , you best replace it all , heres my evil estimate ..........OUCH says I
Not one to jump at the first quote the kind hearted and trusting yachtie asks another rigger to inspect the rig , "its not the best he says but I've seen worse".
The yachtie slightly confused decides that as he is off around the globe and wants a quiet time of it to employ the services of the new rigger and agrees to the masts being removed.
Kind hearted and benevolent yachtie also also employs a sparky to replace and rewire all the lights and the mast wiring whilst those towers of power were laid on the trestles the yachtie looks at the sheaves replaced (supposedly) by the evil rigger.
Hmmm old sheaves that dont even spin in the cheeks, totally seized and heavily worn .... (Gasps heard from the audience).
Moral of the story: if you want to get paid by me for doing a job , DO THE JOB or be prepared to face upto a raving lunatic in your office bad mouthing you and your company in front of all your new customers (that walk out)
So KIWI RIGGING SUCK ..... XW rigging got the job and although not cheap , from what I can see done very well
