The Balearic Islands Again

16 May 2018 | Nora, Sardinia, Italy
Joni
The market at Cagliari was as good as last time. It reminded me of the St. Lawrence market in Toronto. There were many stalls of fruit and I wanted to get a watermelon, so Jonas and I took turns carrying it back home. We bought delicious parmesan cheese and the watermelon was delicious. We also bought swordfish and a man gave Sirius a sausage.

The next day, we sailed and anchored in an archeological site with an old Roman town called Nora. We were only allowed to see them with a guide and the English tour was not until over an hour later, but we wanted to leave the sketchy anchorage to go somewhere else when it was done, so we did the tour in French. I understood a bit of it, and Mom was translating most of the time. There was a temple of Asclepius, the god of medicine, and old streets and the remains of buildings. There were also lotus of baths. The Roman style is nice, but I prefer the Greek style. Then we sailed to Matafaldo, an anchorage with a big beach.

We did an overnight passage to the Balearic Islands, an island group off of Spain. We had been there on the way into the Mediterranean and are hopefully going to do one more passage to Gibraltar. We are in Mahon, on the island of Menorca. There is a big fortress here, which the Spanish built in the 1840s and 50s in case of British invasion. It was the most complex and impenetrable fortress I have ever seen. There was a huge moat, and a trick passageway for enemies that led them into the moat, where they got shot at. There was a huge passageway with archways that was perfectly straight and went on as far as the eye could see, so that it felt like you were looking through a mirror. There were also huge mazes underground for storing powder. It was dark and creepy. It was never used. After that, we played capture the flag in a place that we named Twin Peaks. It looks like someone blasted a gap in a hill leaving the two sides of the hill intact but with a path in between, intending to put a road there, but there's no road. It is ideal for playing capture the flag. That day was Mother's Day, so Dad, Jonas, and I were going to make Mom dinner. We ran out of time, though, so I made Mom shortbread instead and we will make her dinner another night.

We walked to town the next day and went shopping. Dad had to be back at Blue Hour by 5:00 pm, but it took us a while to find the grocery store so that by the time we found it, we only had ten minutes to do a quick shop before heading home. That night we were planning to leave, since it was better weather to go at night than in the day, but then Dad said that it might be alright today. It wasn't, and he has spent all morning staring at the weather forecast.
